What do i do with a child who uses the 2nd law of thermodynamics as an excuse to not clean their room?

  5. Explain that the laws of thermodynamics only apply within a closed system, and neither the child's room nor your house fit that description.

    Then gently but consistently insist the child clean his/her room out of respect for the others living in the house.

  6. Tell them you find their reasoning fascinating and informative.

    Then go into their room with large garbage bags and clear the entire mess out.

    They can earn their belongings back - one at a time - when they follow the rules.

  7. Give thanks that you have an intelligent child who pays attention to his/her studies.  Then try to abide by the first law of parenting adolescents: "Pick your battles."
