  1. Buy a scatch post and eveytime you catch him clawing somthing he shouldnt be slap him with a roll of newspaper(it dosnt hurt but the sound scares them into thinking it dose) and bring him to the scratch post.

    Good luck

  2. get scratching posts they eventually slow down on the scracthing though

  3. Get a good sturdy scratching post, something that won't tip over when he puts his weight on it & is tall enough for him to stretch out on to scratch. some cats won't use a post if the cat doesn't feel it will hold up against their weight. When you see him scratching something he shouldn't be take him over to the post and show him how to use it by scratching it yourself. When you you see him going to the post on his own give him praise for being good, pet him, give him a treat, whatever.

  4. you could always trim his claws a bit. either use the trimmers for cats and do it yourself or take him to the groomer. also they make little claw covers that you can put on him. they stay on till the claw grows and makes them not want to use their claws, if i remember right.  if there are other cats in the house he might be trying to set up his "territory", especially if he isn't fixed. also try rubbing some catnip on the scratching post, and spraying bitter apple (or something similar) on the furniture. the bitter apple stuff is usually for chewing, but it also smells bad to them so i may deter from wanting the scratch somewhere that smells bad.

hope you find something that works, i know how frustrating it can be.

  5. Definitely get something appropriate for him to scratch. My cats actually love the cheap cardboard scratchers that you can get pretty much anywhere (even the grocery store!). They usually come with catnip, which encourages the cat to use it. Get more than one and put them in several places, vertically and horizontally. That way your kitten will have choices and several places to get his scratching out. Reward him with a treat when you see him using the scratcher. If all else fails, confine him in one area while you are gone and make sure that there is nothing that he can scratch in there. Good luck!

I also use the water bottle trick, which can be effective. However, one of my kitties is a water lover so she was unfazed!!

  6. did you try a scratching post for the kitty?  It is a natural instinct for cats to claw or sharpen their claws.  This is a tough one to answer, my cat is declawed for this very reason.  She has no claws but still has the urge to "claw" at my couch, but no damage.

You can try a water bottle and spray the cat every time you see it scratch where it is not suppose to.  it will take time but is more humane to train your little kitty to do what you want it to do.

    good luck

  7. I bought one of those cheap cardboard scratching boxes from a pet store and my kitten hasn't scratched my furniture once.  That could work and they are relatively inexpensive.

  8. Use a water pistol to squirt him everytime he does it on the furniture. Keep doing it and in about 2 weeks he should know not to. Get a cat scratch post too.

  9. When you catch him scratching something spray him with a water pistol. The other idea is to try and tape tin foil on your couch corners, wherever he is scratching. Also, make sure you trim his nails often just don't hit the quick.
