there is nothing wrong with the lock itself, it turns perfectly when its not in the door frame- ie testing it out, its the way it fits into the door frame it gets jammed and is hard to turn, especially in heat apparently. so, what do i need? a lock smith? or a builder type person of some sort to sort out the way the lock/door fits into the frame? thanks

  1. It just needs easing a bit and if you persevere with it it'll remedy itself. A bit of oil might help.

  2. The striker is hanging up on the striker plate. I would use a handyman or what you are calling a builder. It will be a lot cheaper than a locksmith.

  3. Put the lock to locked with door open, push door to, line up the bit sticking out on the frame, mark top and bottom of piece, move door away and look to see what the alignment is, also how deep the slot is, adjust as necessary.

  4. take the strike plate off and shave the hole bigger put the plate back on and that should do the trick.  The strike plate is where the bolt or lock part goes into the door frame.(not the handle or the door itself.)

  5. The answer is behind door #2.

The door isn't fitting properly into the frame, causing the lock to bind. Get the carpenter or your local home handyman to adjust the door.

  6. Is this a UPVC door? If it is, we`ve had the same problem, especially the door sticking in warmer weather. The other problem about the door not locking could be wear on the hinges, especially the top one.It might take two people, but double glazed doors can be lifted off their hinges when in the fully open position (you may find covers over the hinges which can be prised off quite easily) and you can put washers over the pins of the hinges to compensate for the wear. With internal doors with hinges with a removable pin you can swap the top and bottom pins for a temporary fix but the hinges will need to be replaced at some point.
