What do i need for my new employer to pay my tax?

I havn't been earning for the last year and a half, so therefore havn't been able to pay any tax, the job that i left a year and a half ago, we didn't part on great terms and she didn't give me my p45 , now i am going for a different job and i'm just so stressed out and panicking! i don't have a p45 to give to my new employer and i am aware that when she does pay my tax she will see i havnt been able to contibute for the last however long! what will i need to give my new employer and is there any way that the tax can get me a p45 somehow, thanks so much for any answers!!!

  1. Tell your new emplyer that you haven't got a P45........ it's no big deal, they will sort out a P46 instead, and you'll be on a standard rate of tax contributions.  Nothing at all for you to be worried about


  2. Contact your local tax office and they will sort it out for you.

  3. This is not a problem, ask your employer for a P46. This form is used when employees do not have a P45

  4. Your form P45 would be so out of date that a new employer couldn't use it anyway.

    Don't panic! This is a common situation, and new employer won't turn a hair. New employer should ask you to sign form P46 to say it is your main/only job. She will then put you on the emergency code. This will deduct the correct weekly amount of tax, but will not take into account your backlog of tax allowances from 6th April until you start the job.

    To sort that, download form P91 from hmrc/p91, complete back to the time you left last job (ensure all time is accounted for, even if, say, housewife, or jobseekers), and send to tax office. New employer can give you address and details. Correct code will then be sent to employer.
