  1. raincoat

  2. Listen to d**k.  Also, if you plan on traveling by train, look into getting a railpass and figure out which zones you'll be traveling in.  Just go to google and type in railpass and it'll give you the site you need.  Contrary to what d**k said, I think you should develop a basic German vocabulary before coming over.  Most Germans CAN speak English, but they find it rude to EXPECT them to do it.  If you try and speak German, they'll be more willing to help you out.

  3. -4 days worth of clothing (you can wash them twice a week in a machine or by hand as you go)

    -camera

-lock to lock things down in the hostel/train.

-sleeping bag (you can shove your valuables to the bottom of it at night)

    -toiletries and meds

    -phrase book

-passport, credit cards, emergency contact info

    Things you don't need:

-pillow (come on, you can do without it. Plus you can use wadded up clothing)

-laptop (internet cafes are all over and it's too much of a liability)

-12 pairs of shoes...one pair of good sturdy boots and one pair of shower sandles will suffice.

    -jewelry. Attracts thieves.

  4. If you are just going to Germany, bring the biggest carry-on-the-airplane pack you can find. Don't bother loading up the 90-liter camping backpack that you could hide a body in. Bring two pairs of pants, five shirts, three undies n socks, one pair of shoes n sandals, a hat, Lonely Planet Germany and the basic toiletries. By basic I mean a little bottle of shampoo n toothpaste, a razor and your toothbrush. Skip the sleeping bag unless you are camping...most hostels don't let you use them anymore because of bedbugs. This should all weigh under 7 kilos which will get you on and off the plane in no time, and you won't be fighting aching back muscles after luggin it around the Frankfurt airport. Anything else you need you can get in Germany. I have been backpacking for six years (currently in Australia) and have learned to scale down. You won't be sorry. And look up the common signs of bedbugs and check your bed if you are hosteling. You don't wanna wake up with red welts all over your face that stay for a week.

Lots of young folks speak english in Europe so you won't have too much trouble.
