  1. Are you in college?  If so don't worry about it until the first day of class, because art classes cast a bundle.  Always have on hand a #2 pencil, but be prepared you may need a pencil set with the different shades. Ex. H, #2, #5, etc.  You could always e-mail your instructor and ask or ask at the book store.  Before you buy at the college book store check at the local arts and craft stores, sometimes they are a whole lot cheaper.  Consider a sketch book, but the instructor may want you to purchase a certain size or paper quality.  Good Luck You Will Do Fine!

  2. if you're starting college then a range of pencils, oil pastels, paint brushes and soft pastels to start of with would be a good idea, go to an art shop and explain to the shopkeeper what your situation is and they should be able to help you out a bit, i wouldn't recommend buying a sketchbook just yet, lecturers often request a certain sized one for certain project,

  3. It would be helpful if you had some ability, talent and a desire to art. It is a hard row to hoe to become famous or successful as a fine artist. It can be done but there are no guarantees.

    Good luck!
