  1. Usually, nothing but cables.  You connect the video and L-R audio cable outputs on the VCR to the matching inputs on the DVR, set the DVR to watch the connections you just used (as opposed to watching the antenna/cable - and some DVRs have more than one set of inputs), press "record" on the DVR and "play" on the VCR.
