  1. I can't answer for the state of Florida but in our state you are required to be licensed as a day care.   We are required to have a "director"...which can also be the preschool teacher if your licensed number is under a certain amount.  A director must have a bacherlor's degree or equivalent (education and experience)...you should be able to get your information online...check your state's main web page.  We also have to have to take an administration course.  Getting this information is your first step.

    Questions to ponder:

    *  Is this going to be in your home or in a building?  Different licensing requirements and costs...different zoning etc.

    *  How large is the need in your area?  Will it be profitable?

    *  Will you be teaching preschool only or will this be a child care center?  Different costs involved.

    *  Think about staffing requirements and staff training...what are you going to do to keep the staff...child care has a high rate of turnover and interviewing and replacing staff takes $$$...more than you think... your administration courses will help you in this area. Consider what training is required after your staff is in place and how you are going to see that they receive the required training.

    *  Think and prepare your philosophy, handbooks, policies for families and staff.

    *  What type of curriculum are you going to use?  What type of assessment?

    *  There may be grants out there for outdoor equipment and such or for new center openings...consider that.  Quality outdoor equipment costs quite a bit of $$$$.

    *  how are you going to advertise...consider an open house.  What are your marketing plans for after you open?

    *  Consider not only the direct costs of the program, when you are in the planning, but also the indirect costs (not obvious costs)

I could go on but these will get your brain on high gear if you haven't thought of these already!  (My husband and I went through the process of opening a center/preschool...there is a lot more involved that we thought!  And I've been in this field for 10 years...so it's not like I was coming "off the street" and deciding to open a center!)   I recommend you find someone who can be your mentor...someone who has opened a preschool/center and has had success!  Good luck!
