Anyways you need the following

Airline ticket - See travel agent

Passport -  Visit you post office

Visa ( possibly) - See travel agent

No criminal record

Suitcase or backpack - Look for sales before you buy

Take a universal power adapter if the country you are going to has a different power outlet to yours.

Besides your needs (clothes, toothbrush), make sure to bring your passport and the appropriate visa, if needed to the airline. You are required to have both of these to leave the country.  There is nothing else that you need, really. If you forget something, you can always buy it. Remember to get your money converted in the US or at the airport.
