My uncle is going to arrange a turkey hunt but i've never done hunters education or any of that. i already have a gun (registered to my dad) so he'll be there too. but what do i need? like do i need the hunting education class(if so, do i have to take it in illinois or can it be cali)? do we need to register the gun with that FOID card? or is it as simple as bringing the gun, going to walmart, getting a turkey license and then going to the fields?

thanks

  1. I am pretty certain you can get this information on the Internet by typing in Illinois Dept. Of Natural Resources and look through the site. You should be able to either ask your question or get some response.

I wish you luck on your hunt if you are able to actually participate. You could go along without a gun but I know this is not as much fun. Camo clothing will be needed and Turkey see and hear quite well. So you will need to be very still. Illinois is starting to get a very good population of turkey. If you are fall hunting, the birds are a little more lax in being careful than they are in spring season.

  2. don't do it

    :*(

  3. Hunter education course for sure. As far as registering the gun that I cant tell you. I cant imagine a state requiring you to register a gun to come give them money to hunt. In Missouri you jsut go get the tags and go hunt, but Illinoise isnt nearly as gun friendly as Missouri is.

See if you can find an online copy or order a copy of Firearms Laws of the 50 States. It will tell you everything you need to know concerning transporting and using your gun in any given state. I had one but it burned with my house so I cant look it up for ya man.

  4. I've never turkey hunted in IL, but I do live and hunt deer there.

Lets try and answer your questions one at a time (I'll try and provide links)

Hunter's Safety:  If you were born after 1/1/80, you need to take a Hunters Safety class.  You can be excluded from this requirement if you can prove that you have been previously issued a hunting license either in IL or another state  (http://dnr.state.il.us/safety/hunt.htm).  If you take a Hunter's Education class in CA, I am sure that the state of IL would accept that, as long as you can show proof that you have completed the class (usually you are issued a card).

FOID Card:  If you are not a resident if IL, you do not need a FOID card to possess a firearm, provided it is cased and unloaded when you are not hunting.  You will not be able to buy ammo for the firearm unless you have your non-resident hunting license and it is the hunting season.  I'd recommend bringing your ammo with you or having your uncle buy it for you to save the hassle.  If you want to read the FOID statues, you can view them at http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilc...

Permit:  I believe you need to apply for a permit (on top of your license).  You need to apply for the permit regardless if you are hunting on private or public land.  The permits are about $40 for tenants of private land and $125 for non-tenants (in other words, you or your parents don't live on the land).  The earlier you get your applicaiton in, the better.

License:  I don't even want to imagine what IL will soak you for a non-resident license.  You can check out the prices and buy them online at https://www3.wildlifelicense.com/il/star...  Personally, I like to buy my license online because if you lose them, you can print off another copy for free from anywhere.  You may need to buy a Habitat stamp when you get your license.  It'll tell you when you buy it online or if you buy it locally, you can ask them.

Here is the Illinois DNR section on turkey hunting.  The Illinois DNR website leaves a lot to be desired IMHO,  but if you look around, you can find all the info you need:  http://dnr.state.il.us/admin/nonresturke...

    Good Luck and happy hunting

  5. well no, for a foid card you may have to wait for at least 3-6 months, but make sure there are no pistols on you, since Illinois has a ban on carrying pistols. But you just need to get a hunting permit, and make sure the gun is broken down, untill you get to where you are going to hunt
