  1. If you plan to do strictly On-site service then my suggestion would be:

-Install discs for windows 98 through vista

-Some good diagnostic discs. Make sure you have plenty of utilities for both hardware and software scans.

-Your trusty Phillips screwdriver(preferably with a magnetized tip)

-A flash drive(at least 2gb should do) for transferring small amounts of data and holding Anti-virus/Anti-spyware scanners

-USB-to-IDE and USB-to-SATA adapters(for hooking up hard drives as external for data backup or transfer)

-Data recovery software if you can afford

-A laptop(for diagnosing network problems more efficiently)

-As much experience as possible. On-site PC repair is very easy and friendly....when you know what you're doing. The minute something happens and you have no idea what to do, it becomes h**l. Learn to improvise and always stay confident in front of the client. If you don't know the answer to a question say "i'll find out" not "i don't know".

That's about as prepared as you can be. Just remember, clients don't understand computers. Take it slow and learn to explain things so that they can understand. And always be up-front with your charges.

My qualifications: i have been a PC technician for over 5 years and i am Microsoft certified. I am currently preparing to open my own repair shop with outside funding.
