i have a linksys router with tomato firmware and i want to get free internet. tomato's interface is asking me to put in ip addy subnet mask etc for my internet connection and it is not referring to the settings of my machine. the antenna has no ip. i tried dhcp, that did not work. there are plenty of networks around me and it is a strong antenna. this should not be the type of question that one would have to guess at. what settings do i use? prove to the world that you do have the proper computer skills and that you are not merely one of many recently cranked out graduates of a computers -r- us school.

  1. lol i havent even finished highschool, so nothing to prove :D.

anyway. to connect to your neighbors networks, use your wireless connection interface id recommend just using windows base connection program (if your using windows), not this tomato software. however you should NOT need an IP, the router you are trying to connect to should infact have DHCP, but you are saying the router doesnt? then they have set static internal IP's. which you cant help unless you can get into there router directly through another PC. try another network.

    PS:

subnet mask is usually : 255.255.255.0

and without knowing what type of router it is i cant tell you what type of IP it would be.

  2. First off, you cannot get free internet via your router if you don't have it set up with your phone company...

Should you wish to connect to one of the many networks around you. You have to do it directly from your computer, not through your router. In which case, you should be able to find an unsecured (unencrypted) network nearby and connect to that. Should you choose to connect to an encrypted network, you will need to capture the many floating packets that pass by your wireless card. You will need to install peek protocol drivers and have a wireless device with either an Agere, Atheros, Symbol, or Cisco chipset.

Using a program called aircrack or airsnort you should be able to capture enough packets to discover the wep key in use by the other networks. I am assuming, by the smart *** comment you made at the end of your question details you should have a fair idea of what I have said. If not, I am available on yahoo messenger.
