  1. Spray Roundup on it and then cover the area with newspaper for a week or so. Then you can test your soil and amend it (just let the newspaper decompose into it as compost). After that you can reseed anytime.

  2. I understand your frustration with crabgrass because I've had my own unpleasant experience and challenge of killing it too.

Although you would like it to be gone immediately and are willing to kill the entire lawn and reseed--there might be better solutions for the long run.

Killing the whole lawn will leave your soil non-plantable for between 2 months to 3 years depending on what vegetation killer you use.  In the same 2 months, you can get rid of most of the crabgrass if you are persistent with applying a crabgrass killing agent that will spare the rest of your grass.  I used MSNA AND Image which can be a little pricey but ended up being worth it to me because it was SO very effective!

Also, by only killing the crabgrass and sparing the life of the lawn--you will keep organic matter feeding into the soil as well as beneficial life such as worms etc.

After you treat your crabgrass, make sure that you treat your lawn with a high quality "pre-emergent" in the early fall and again in late winter (for most locations) to prevent new weed seeds from even sprouting.  This is necessary to prevent the weed seeds that blow in or are deposited in bird droppings from migrating into your lawn next season.

Make sure you feed your grass with regular fertilizing to keep it at it's healthiest too.  Healthy lawns are much more able to assist in choking out weeds and naturally help provide some resitance to letting weeds start growing.

Best of luck in a frustrating situation.  Just know that you will be able to see your great progress as your lawn gets healthier and more beautiful over time.  Check with your local nursery or University Extension office to talk with a Master Gardener.  Master gardeners donate their time to the community for free and will be able to help you with the best solution for your area.

  3. Use Round Up. You can get it at Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, True Value, nurseries, etc. Make sure you read and follow the directions. Yeah, I know, but read the directions anyway.
