Energy flow in ecosystems is usually described as a food web (or pyramid), showing how food is converted to biomass at each successive trophic level, and with energy lost to heat and waste. Only about 10% of the biomass at one trophic level is converted to biomass at the next higher level.  So, in most ecosystems, primary producers are more numerous than herbivores, and top predators have the lowest numbers.
