What do longshore men do and what types of hours do they work?

My boyfriend is thinking of changing jobs. Longshoremen make really good $$$ but they work long hours. More info greatly appreciated.

It's generally unionized - and thought to be a pretty good job - although it can be seasonal.  But once you're in the Union - you can start getting work.

They can work long hours - but under the Union contracts - that's where the big money can come in.  The attached article says that the average dockworker salary can be around 100,000 if you factor in overtime and shift differential.

The work varies greatly - from grunt work manhandling things - to trained work - operating large cranes and machinery.
