What do mean when they say 1000 watts peak on a amplifier???

I have an understanding on RMS power, but i dont get when they say alot more watts, then it can actually putt out?

Root Mean Square is the RMS, if you look at a sine wave of lets say a AC circuit the RMS of the line is 120v while the peak voltage is 169.7, the same principle applies to the amplifier.

Stereo manufacturers often display peak power ratings on the face of their products. The peak power rating tells you the maximum wattage an amplifier can deliver as a brief burst during a musical peak, like a dramatic drum accent. The RMS figure is more significant.

and the cheap companies that you should avoid usually boast peak/max wattage and you cant find anything about the RMS wattage, they do it to catch people that don't know the difference off guard and let them think that they are getting a deal

the peak is what what it can handle before it will fry....its how they test in in there chambers    go with rms

1000 watts peak means it is the most amount of watts that it can  put out in a dramatical musical burst, look at RMS (RMS is the continuous amount of watts you will hear).  always look at RMS numbers, it is most accurate.  cheap brands advertise their stuff with MAX WATTS 1000 watts to get the buyer to buy them.
