Employers can check a bevy of services when it comes to pre-employment background checks.  In my experience as a background screening professional, almost all background checks include the criminal component.  In addition, they may check the driving record, past employers, educational history, credit, references, etc.  The company is required tell you that you did not get hired as a result of the background check, if that is in fact the case.  

  3. They usually check for any criminal records the person have gotten.
