I was wondering what most hospitals use to put a patient out for an operation because I recently underwent a heart surgery and forgot to ask. Later on I was like, "Hmm, I wonder what they shot me up with in that IV that knocked me out?"

So yeah, does anyone know what hospitals most commonly use to put their patients under through an IV?

  1. Anaesthesia is often made by multiple drugs.

Muscle blockers like  succinylcholine or vecoronium will paralyze you.

For sedation/hypnotisis tiopenton, propofolol and midazolam is most used.

For pain relief mostly opiods are used. Fentanyl and remifentanyl is often in use.

Ketamine is a special drug by which you could give anaesthesia with only one drug. It is useful because the patient remains breathing by himself.

Inhalation/Gas anaesthesia is also an option and gives many of the effects of the drugs. Examples are sevofluran and isofluran. Gas could also be given together with IV anaesthesia.

  2. For a heart surgery its definately general anesthesia used to knock u done, n its a combination of inhalational gases and intravenous drugs used to supress the central nervous system to get u into a state of temporary unconsciousness and be painless simultaneously. Intravenously most popularly used are diazepam, pentazocine and ketamine. Relatively, they also depend on every individual s pre-operative status. And throughout the surgery, the anesthetist will keep monitoring ur status and adding relevant drugs as required.
