You should get a light bmx bike that has pegs.

u can get fox gloves to protect ur hands, helmet just in case, wear pants to protect knees, flat shoes that have a grippy pattern(aka vans) thats about it

Get some odyssey grips for the bike. Vans are really good for gripping on the pedals. Pants are good to wear incase the pedal grips pop up into your legs.

For the most protection get motocross pants, jersey, chest protector, gloves, and a full-face dot approved helmet.  rockymountainatv.com has a good selection.  Any skate shoes will work.  If you are going to race you may want to eventually look into clip shoes.  At a minimum, you'll want long sleeves, long pants, and a helmet.  If you go this route elbow and knee pads would be helpful.  A little tip from someone who knows, you don't realize the extent of protection you'll need until you crash hard and wish you had the good gear!
