Hi, I found a newt in my garden (it was under the pot) and it was so cute! I put it back into a vacant flower pot so I could sort of keep it as a pet but in the wild. He's still there. If you have a newt, please help.

  1. dont do what charlette says shes cruel and thoughtless and has been told on lot of occasions that newts/salamanders taken from the wild dont do well in captivity. many die those that survive have stress and health issues

all the food choice above are good just wondering are u in the UK (in the UK the term newt is used more than salamander is why im guessing u are) because the great crested newt is a protected species that is illegal to disturb handle move kill or capture.

finally whoeva said its a salamander because its not in water: many newts go through a terrestrial phase and some species (when not in mating season) spend a large amount of time out of the water)

  2. u can feed him turtle food but i do think it is a salamander but it can still eat turtle food

  3. Insects and earth worms. I suggest leaving the newt alone as it is fine on its own and may still stay in your yard. Every animal from the wild that lives and STAYS in the wild can be everyones pet.=]

  4. newts will take live insects including crickets, wax worms, and bloodworms. Make sure the prey is small enough for the newt to eat it. Some will eat fish food such as shrimp pellets, brine shrimp, or turtle floating food sticks.

  5. Hello, i breed reptiles and it is newts that fascinate me the most.

    There current diet is:

    Chopped worms

    water crustaceans

    , bloodworm,

    tubifex,

small water snails and strips of raw, lean meat offered with tweezers are taken in the aquatic stage.

They also enjoy various insects or spiders which stray on to the water surface.

In the terrestrial state they hunt small worms,

    slugs,

    woodlice,

    crickets,

    spiders,

    freshly-sloughed mealworm and waxworm.

At every third or fourth sitting the prey can be lightly dusted in a multi-vitamin supplement.

    Hope this helped : ]

  6. Newts love Crickets and Waxworms. You can buy these at Petsmart or Petco or a local pet store. If you do go there get some calcium powder for Lizards and Amphibians that you sprinkle on the food, Its is GREAT for them. You can also feed her/him normal worms that you find in the garden but you dont HAVE to get the calcium, its just good for them.

Make sure she has water Newts and Salamanders usually love water. If you can it would be best if you bought a 10 gallon tank at petsmart for about $12 and you can buy some cute little plants and a little water dish for them to swim in.

I kept a Salamander i found and she loves life, please if you have ANY questions email me at chancerocks10@yahoo.com.   :)
