What do options mean in sports player contracts?

I have always wondered this. For example, recently in baseball, Manny Ramirez has been upset about Boston picking up his 20 mil option. What do they mean by this?

  2. It means after this season the Red Sox have an option to sign him to one more season at $20 million dollars or allow him to become a free agent; which means Manny can sign a contract with any team that wishes to sign him.
