  1. There isn't anything wrong with people having unique names.

Now when I say unique, I do not mean names like Lawfawndah.

I mean names that already exist but just a different way of spelling.

For example, if I were to have a little girl, I'd name her Peyton but I'd spell it Paitien, ya know? Stuff like that. Or Haley, how about Haleigh, Haylee, or Hayley? There's nothing wrong with people having unique names, just make sure the name doesn't sound like a body part or some sexually transmitted disease. For example v****a (Vah-gee-nah), it's too close to the actual word v****a. But besides that, unique names are absolutely fine! :)

  2. I love unique names but the only problem with them is they open the child up to more criticism and humiliation by the child's peer than a regular name. Plus, it can hinder them in the future as far as getting jobs since employers tend to be prejudice towards people in odd names.

  3. Because I would rather be the 2nd Emily in a class than have a teacher ask me "F..faa...far....far... how do you say your name girl?"

One thing is an already made name that does exist in the country you're from another thing is putting your kid Alyrinmsie

When I was little a girl was lost in my school, an administrator called out for her name in the loud speaker and everyone in my class laughed at it, they wouldn't do that to an Isabella.

  4. Because names like Nevaeh are ugly and are going to get the child teased when he/she gets to school.

also i hate when people think that spelling Emily as

    Emmeligh

    Emelie

    Emma Lee

    Emilee

    Emiley

    etc

    makes it unique IT DOESNT

BTW i know what its like to have a "unique or differnt" name, my namie is Jessie Mellalieu-Enriquez, and almost ALL of the teacher at high school would call me Jessica it was so annoying and its also hard if you have a different last name like mine because one is Maori and the other is Spanish, i hated that too.

  5. I had a last name that had to constantly be spelled.  If I left them be, people would usually spell it wrong.  The phonetic natural way to spell it was off by a letter.  Well, I married someone with a last name that has to be spelled, so my children are in the same boat.

I don't want them to constantly have to spell their first name or repeat it, because people aren't sure what it is.  I don't want them to have a name that sounds like I strung a string of syllables together.  There's a large number of widely accepted "real" names, many of which aren't that common (like Susannah).  If I wanted something less common, I'd go to those, not to "unique" ones which usually sound odd to me.

Personally, it's enough to me to avoid the top 10 names.  That alone results in a huge reduction in frequency compared to #1.  I'd drop lower, but the classic names we like tend to be on the high side these days....

  6. Unique names are cool as long as they aren't ridiculous like Nevaeh or Chlamydia.

  7. I don't mind unique names, but what I have a problem with is ridiculous names.

Here are just a couple of names I've seen on Y!A today...

--Clementine Daydream Magnolia Rainbow Messalina (all one name!!!)

--Diana Windsong Morticia Ingallil (also all one name)

    --Meadow

    --Marvel & Mabel (twins)

    --Suzuki Dollop

    --Miami

    --Rainbow

    --Precious

Your children WILL be made fun of if you name them things like "Suzuki" and "Marvel." Honestly, when I tell people that I dislike a name they've chosen, I'm telling them because I'm thinking about their children. It's not fair to them to not be able to spell their name until they're 8 years old. And it's not fair to them to be made fun of because of their name.

If they end up liking it, great, but if they hate it, their self esteem is gonna take a major blow everytime someone says "Wait...your name is RAINBOW?"

I like unique spellings. Such as Alix instead of Alex. Or Monika instead of Monica. Those are fine. But when you start spelling Katelyn as Kaitelynne, that's just pointless.

  8. Well, it depends on how unique their name is. For example, there have been people who have named their child Unique (honestly, can you imagine how embarrassing that must be?) In reality, half the time the "unique" names are incredibly ridiculous and they'll end up being quite embarrassing for the kid when they grow up. For example, these days some people give their children horrible names like Princess or Nevaeh or Precious. I don't know about you, but I would find it quite embarrassing to have to tell people that my name is Princess or whatever horrific name my parents came up with. I think that parents should keep in mind that when their child grows up they probably won't want to tell others that their name is Apple or Flower or something equally as strange.

  9. I like having my children have unique names and since everyone is doing it im not too worried bout my kids being picked on because she's not going to be the only one.  I dont remember making fun of kids with names that are different.  Its usually the younger people like me who like the different spelling or unique names.  I guess we just grew up thinking that being unique is best.  My daughters name is Kaitym and whenever someone reads it on here they think it sounds silly but when i tell people her name in person they love it but it might be because they seen her and she's a really pretty lil blonde girl so they think how cute.  I do that sometimes but i like her name because its not like  everyone elses and i dont have to worry bout her name being mixed with someone else and if she dont like it she can be called Kate or Katie.

  10. I like less overused names and names which are slightly on the fringe, but when you go past a certain point it just gets annoying.  Hokey spellings and way out there names are just a bit much.  Besides, it's not like you've ever had to deal with people struggling to figure out what your name is or if your a boy/girl or if you're parents were on drugs when they named you, right Lindsey???  Anyone can name their child whatever they want, but in the end what a parent should truly consider is how this will affect their child throughout their child's entire lifetime (picture a 98 year old women named Princess or Coconut or whatever) as well as how much they like that particular name.

  11. I think that it isn't a bad thing to have a unique name just as on as it isn't straight stupid. Names like Aaliyah spelt Ahleya or Aliyah make sense as they still sound the same when sounded out.

Names such as Willie and f***y are pretty stupid, the kid is going to be teased till eternity and names spelt in a difficult way such as Kayleighah look like Kayleigh-Hah when really they are Kayleigh-Ah. Why not just spell it Kayleah and be over with it, at least people will know the persons name.

In saying that, names like Ava and Abigail are way overused and I'm not trying to say that you should use these common names either. Somewhere in the middle with names such as these ones would be a good cross between unique and common:

    Audrey

    Alaina

    Janae

    Kiara

    Cheyenne

    Acacia

    Alyssa

    Charlotte

    Dayna

    Estelle

    Elise

    Jade

    Sienna

    Leah

    Paige

    Savannah

    Evelyn

    Selena

    Simone

    Katherine

    Renee

    Amber

    Regan

    Thomas

    Chase

    Caleb

    Blake

    Jerome

    Lucas

    Liam

    Seth

    Elijah

    Noah

I also agree with you on names such as Zane, Xavier, Levi and Yasmin. They aren't that bad and are able to be spelt while not being your common, everyday name.

    Great question :)

  12. Because most of them just sound downright trashy, in all honesty.

Your child is the one who has to live with your decision.

  13. I really like unique names, but as long as there not just like Neveratungalung :S They're fine. I really like the name Shwan, but people really get up me about calling my child Shwan Macmillion, I think it's fine and my daughter is so cute I dont think she would ever get teased by her name as she's beautiful, and so is Shwan Macmillion ♥

  14. Well, depends on what you mean by unique names. Name some examples.

I'm all for uncommon names, as long as they are spelled correctly and don't ridicule the child.

  15. I'm not against unique names but as it has been stated, sometimes kids make fun of them.

My name is Michelle and I've never been made fun of for my name.

And I do like unique spellings as long as they aren't ridiculous.

Like Emily should remain spelled that way and Lee/Leigh should remain one of those two ways.

Some unique names are good..like this one girl in my art history class is name Hadley Pepper and I think that is a cool name..
