Mainly, the majority are not clandestine jobs.  They look at hordes of data from crop yields in Nigeria to rain patterns in China, they look at newspapers and news magazines from foreign countries, they keep tabs on opposition parties and their activities, they look at terrorist groups, student groups, unions, agrarian organizations.

One thing they did was fund, create and train the now terrorist group Al Qaeda in 1979 to carry out missions that the USA didn't want their name on.
