What do people mean when they say 'life is what you make it'?

I'm really unhappy, but I didn't choose to be unhappy. If lifes what I make it then why am I?

your life is how you decide you want to spend it and live it, the decisions YOU make determine the course of your life and the attitude you decide to have about life, if you think life is worth c**p, your life will be c**p, you think life is a beautiful thing, your life will be pretty awesome

If you want your life to be a certain way you have to try and make it happen... It's the belief that we are in ultimate control of our own destiny. As opposed to the belief that out destiny is already paved before us.

They mean that, based on the decions you make and the attitude that you have, you can be successful or happy, or on the other hand, you can be sad and miserable. Your decisions and attitude can chape how your life turns out, basically.

It means that you can choose to be sad and discouraged or always negative or you can choose to be happy no matter what and to count your blessings.

So you decide by your attitude how  your life is.  You can also do the things  you want to make it better or worse.  It is the old half-full or half-empty --- which is it to you.  One sees the cup as half full and that is positive, they have it there, but others choose to see it as half empty and agonize over it - being negative.  So life is what you make it -- doing pretty good or doing pretty lousy - by your own attitude and how you choose to deal with it.

To me it means we make our own luck to a great point. Only we can control our attitudes, making the best of what we have been given.
