What do people mean when they say they've been sober for a period of time.?

Im watchin the south park were stans dad gets a dwi and has to go to AA. So for example, when they say "Ive been sober for X amout of time". does that mean they havent been drunk or havent even had a drink for that amount of time.

  1. it means they have not touched alcohol for that amount of time. the phrase is normally used by those that have or are recovering from alcohol addiction.


  2. Just as everyone else said, sober means not having a single drop of alcohol at all, it doesn't mean being drunk. And if somone is refering to not using drugs they would say "'ve been clean for X ammount of time

  3. it means they havent had a drip of alcohol at all for that amount of time.

  4. its mean they have had a drink for x amount of time.

  5. Hasn't had a sip of alcohol in X amount of time.  It could also mean he hasn't used a certain drug (if he was an addict) in X amount of time.
