What do people see in Floyd Mayweather Jr.?

I see from his videos that he is a good fighter, I do not really like his personality or fighting style, but people say that he was the best pound-for-pound fighter alive.

I try not to bash someone's opinion before I know all the facts, but can anyone tell me what they see or tell me a good fight of his?

  1. he is one of the most talented fighters of all time,

his hit and run style only really started at 147, mainly because he was fighting guys that were alot bigger than him,

watch some of his fights at 140 and below, he tended not to work on the backfoot as much.

he is without doubt one of the most talented fighters of all time.

his speed, reflexes, counter punching, and defensive game are incredible,

watch the gatti , ndou, bruseles,

not the best oposition but you will see all his attributes in these fights

if you cant recognise his talent and ability then quite frankly you know nothing about boxing

  2. i think thats a bit much for someone to say he is the best pound for pound fighter alive. i mean he is talented but for you to be considered the best you have to beat the best which he hasn't. i have to give him props though he is pretty good at avoiding the best...lol. *cough cough* kosta tszyu when he was p4p best in the world, shane mosely. he silently opted out of fighting winky wright about a year ago....he waited to fight oscar until he was like 5 years past his prime...and now h**l probably take on cotto or margarito... or at least whats left of them after they tear each other apart.

  3. Okay, his personality stinks, but that has nothing to do with his ranking in the sport. Mayweather before retiring was considered best pound-for-pound, not only because he was undefeated, but he also possesses the skill and natural athletic ability to succeed. If you rate his speed, his defense, his countering ability and accuracy, Mayweather would be rated surely among the top ten in each category for active fighters.

  4. He's considered the best because he's still undefeated and has won titles in 5 or 6 different divisions I believe.

I personally do not like his fighting style (hit and run).  I also think he could have been challenged by better boxers but he chose not to fight them.  His last fight with Ricky Hatton wasn't really a challenge because Mayweather discovered Hatton's moves early in the fight.  In that sense, Mayweather's a genius.  That and Hatton isn't as good a boxer as say: Mosley.

  5. he's just a very smart, quick, and defensive fighter..

people are hating on him now since he retired early and delahoya wanted to fight him again

but seriously.. mayweather already beat him.. he has nothing else to prove

  6. I've been trying most of my life to explain the sweet science aspect of boxing to the people that think fighters like Floyd are runners.  I'm sorry he doesn't bleed all over the place to make you happy, I'm sorry he doesn't get his brains beats out to make you happy, I'm sorry he doesn't bludgeon his opponents to make you happy.  But there is more than one way to win a fight.  Boxing is judged upon multiple criteria, and those criteria is what allows fighters to adopts a variety of styles.  Without that variety, every fight would look like what you get over in England:  2 guys leaping at each other, flailing away like blindfolded children swinging a stick at a pinata.

The only thing I can tell you to help you educate yourself is to urge you to strap on the boxing gloves and try to do the things he does.  Then you realize how amazing his footwork is.  Then you realize just how impossible his defense is.  Most fighters would get their brains beat out if they attempted the Philly Shell defense.  Floyd makes it work, and the Philly Shell is probably the most daring way to protect yourself:  you rely on a shoulder roll to defend against the cross.  Mess that up and you eat a right hand.  If you strapped on the gloves, you'd immediately understand the conditioning involved.  Watch Floyd and you see a boxer that paces himself so he can have a little more juice in the later rounds.  A lot like a late-running horse that wins the belmont, Floyd throttles back a bit during the middle rounds so he can finish strong.

The facts you'd like to know are all the subtle ones, in order to understand them, most folks need to have some fight experience to fully "get it".  But trust me, the guy is lightyears ahead of all of today's fighters in terms of skill and craft.  He's michelango painting along side kindergardeners smearing pigments on paper with their fingers.

  7. floyd would only make top 50 best boxers . not top 25 not top 10 . this was a  poll in a boxing website with real boxing fans and most agree he would make top 50

  8. He has footwork and ring knowlegde that is un matchable in boxing today. I use to box and his abilities are unnatural in some sense. I don't think he is better than Ray leonard or henry armstrong but i do believe that he has a ability that only comes to one fighter every generation.

  9. We all kno he is good. but not the best pound for pound. Roy Jones jr takes dat.
