I think to answer this properly one would need to take a pickle, gnome and go sit in a garden patch.  Also take one bottle of rum and drink contents.  As I am sure the answer would become extremely easy to see under these conditions.

They are all useful items when you have had too much to drink:

A pickle becomes a nifty weapon with which you can attack a gnome in a garden patch.

A pickle can help you sober up after you have seen gnomes in your garden patch.

They are all green in some way or another. You have to grow a pickle in a garden and you place gnomes in a garden to watch over them!
