As a police officer what do you think about CCW? If you were outgunned, would you want an armed civilian to step in and help you?

  1. I'm not a police officer and i can't speak for any of them but if i were in a situation where i saw a cop outgunned and i had a gun (which i don't) i would give the cop my gun and i would not interfere at all... they are there to protect us and if we could assist them in some ways it's a good thing but i firmly believe we would be in their way and actually complicate the situation the best thing we could do would give them the tools to do their job and not try to do their job for them.  i believe CCW is there for our ability to protect ourselves when there arn't any police around at that time. they can't be everywhere and we should have the right to protect ourselves.... besides criminals don't get their guns at stores they get them in the black market so imho  a criminal is less likely to attack u if he thinks u can protect yourself

  2. If I were in the area of a shoot out, I could take the ruling that my life or families is in danger and take the chance, and shoot the shooter, (not the Officer). but in doing so, would also injepordize me in being shot by another Officer. 50/50, good question, makes one think,

now if the officer went down, I would protect him until another arrived, again, being a touchy situation, CCW, only allows you to protect yourself/family if life threatened..

  3. No, i would not want an armed civilian to step in.

I have seen many people  "pass" the CCW shooting course who can only hit the target about 1 shot out of 10.

  4. I have no problems with Concealed Carry laws at all. As for a permit holder stepping in to help, most if not all permit holders are taught not to. A possible exception would be in the event an Officer was incapacitated and facing certain death if no one helped.

  5. As far as a CCL (Concealed Carry Licence) is concerned, you may use deadly force in defense of others IF, in the same situation, you were allowed to use deadly force in defense of yourself.

CCW is a crime: carrying concealed weapon.

Officers look kindly on CCL holders; if you are ever questioned by cop, andy you show your CCL, the cop knows that, at the very least, you weren't convicted of any major crime for 10 years at the time you got your license.  Of course, it tells him nothing about what you might have been up to lately.

Still, they do feel more at ease, unless the reason that they're talking with you is because you 'match the description'. <G>

  6. You have very good responses here.  I am retired 9-1-1 Dispatcher, and my thoughts would be who knows who is stopping to help!!!

When an officer sees someone with a gun in a dangerous situation it could be more dangerous.  Just my opinion.

  7. Pulling a gun even in defense  if a officer potentially puts the officer in harms way even off duty officers should  stay out of it  in a shootout there is a high chance if you return fire the officer will react & shoot you

  8. NO!!!  With no identifacation, I may think he/she may be the bad guy and not there to help therefore he/she may end up getting hurt.
