  1. Clean toilets, showers, mop floors, cook meals, do laundry, clean cop cars, mow lawns the list gos on and on.

  2. A lot of terminolgy exists today from when something was started. In the old days, when a person was sentenced for a misdemeanor, they went to a jail that assigned small jobs inside and outside of the jail. That was the workhouse. You could be on a roadcrew detail picking up trash on the side of the road.

This stopped quite a few years ago, but the name stuck. Today, you will sit in your cell, coming out during day time hours to sit in a common room with a TV set and stare at the walls. If you are lucky, you might be chosen to be a "porter", which is used to help clean, serve food or help as needed under supervision of the correctional staff. It helps the day go by a lot faster and you eat better.

I hope this helps and you can find it useful
