What do pro golfers mean when they talk about a game plan?

The point of the game is to get the ball in the hole in as little strokes as possible. What other possible game plan is there. Is it only to have a beer after the front 9 or what? Two beers instead of one?

  1. The game plan is the manner in which you hope to play the course. From the practice sessions from prior years or the practice rounds played prior  to this tournament, much information has been noted as to hazards, the rolls of the greens, possible pin positions, the best positions to place drives for advantages for hitting to the greens. Some bunkers are in place where the contestant normally hits his drive . Does he play short or try to boom over that obstacle? Call that a game plan or better still , course management. Take what you are given and make the best of it . Often, you cannot hope for a career recovery. But, by playing smart, you may be  in close contention.

  2. True golfers utilize Course management (game plan).  Where to put this shot so that the next shot will give you a great shot at the pin.....or if the pin is not a wise choice.....where on the green you will actually want to putt from.  To score really low  (Like Chess)  you have to think ahead.   Not just walk up and wack the ball.

  3. i think they mean like a mental gameplan. like, the way you deal with the shots you make or dont make, and how they affect the next hole. also, each hole is different, and each has its own 'game plan'.

  4. Course management is the name of the game.that's why[ route one golfers ]the happy Gilmore gang do not win anything.

  5. golf is as much of a mental game as it is a physical game.  the pros will play several practice  rounds in order to see the course and to develop an idea of how they are going to play it.  next time you watch a tournament notice how the players will stop and talk to their caddies and look into a little notebook.  the book has the distances to all of the hazards and doglegs and anything else of use. they will take note of which par 5's to go for and when to lay up short of the water.  they also take any changes to the course conditions into consideration.  if high winds are expected they might take out certain clubs and add others.  the main purpose is to ensure that there are as few suprises on the course as possible.

  6. When you play another opponent in another sport you have a game plan or at least good teams do.  You have to trust that plan and stay with it.  Just as you pick your shot you have to visualize and trust it.

With golf, the elements will determine what your game plan will be, such as the way Tiger won at Hoylake in 2006.  He used driver once and tore the field apart.  HE STUCK TO HIS GAME PLAN.

Jack Nicklaus was actually the first person to jot down and read the course from different yardages so he could attack through a more accurate game plan.  Hitting to 100 for a better shot so he could use a more accurate edge with a full swing.

It's like any other sport you MUST have a game plan and you MUST stick with it.  Anything can happen and patience in golf pays off.

And YES, the beers at the 19th are just as important a game plan as winning.......LOL

  7. If you ever played serious competition golf you would know.  It's the same with every sport just different approaches.

Example, Golf is one of the very few sports where the stage is always different.  The speed of grass is different, the sand is different the lakes are different the entire layout are different from one court to the next.

A good golf gameplan is to know your strengths and weakness and how that certain golf course can exploit those weaknesses and how you can take advantages on that golf course with your strengths.  If someone hits the ball that starts off to the right then flies to the left(draw) you need to know which holes are designed to discourage that shot.  Thats why they study each course and their details carefully with their caddies

As for the second gameplan which is obviously the mental game, you have to make sure your mind is set.  You cant be indecisive or rattled on the course.  Gotta be solid as a rock and your mentality cool as ice.

Once their gameplan is set and you win that tournament, then have a beer at the 19th hole(the bar)

  8. gameplan= how they will play the course.  They have to know when to lay up and when to go for the green, how agressive they will play.  Will they putt for the birdie or will they just putt it close so they don't go 10 feet past for a difficult par.  Golfers usually go in with a gameplan so when the pressure is on they already know what they want to do instead of worrying about deciding while pressure mounts.
