Keep the vegetables to a minimum. That isn't what they eat in the wild. Also, don't get flakes. Get pellets. If you give flakes somehow they gulp up air when they are eating the flakes. If I would have known this I wouldn't of gotten flakes. Just to let you know, if you have live plants some goldfish will eat them like CRAZY! Small is a relative term with these fish, or any other.  Do you mean newly hatched?  nothing for the first few days, then infusoria.

1/2 plus?  A larger variety of foods.  Basically almost anything that will fit in their mouths.

As they grow larger, feed appropriattely sized foods.  Some choices could be:  insects and other creepy crawlies, algae wafers, pieces of some vegetables, worms, plants.  The list is enormous

Just don't feed them more than they can eat in a couple minutes.  It's beter to feed them a couple small meals a day than one large one.  This will reduce the waste.

Just feeding them on dried food can make them constipated. They also like fresh food like bags of daphnia and bloodworm, which will stop this and they enjoy the fresh food much more. They can be bought in any large pet store.
