  2. If it's rising, sociologists would look at what has changed recently in sexual education or activity. Abstinence-only s*x education comes to mind. So does the declining state of the education system.

    If the single women are not very young, a sociologist would point to increasing economic independence of women and the propensity of cohabitation replacing marriage in many relationships (meaning "single" women can still have a nuclear household without being legally married). In these cases, a rising birthrate among single women would not be considered a social problem in the eyes of relativist sociology.

    Either way, a sociologist wouldn't make a conclusive assumption without doing their research first.
