In France, what does it say on stop signs? Are the stop signs like ours, or do they look different?

The red octogonal sign at the bottom, of course! As you can see, it says "STOP", but at highway tolls you will also find round signs with "Halte" written on them.

There are fewer stop signs in France than in other countries. At an intersection without any stop signs, the person coming from the right has the priority. Unless you are on a major road outside cities. If you are on a priority road, a sign will tell you (it's a yellow diamond) and the other road will have a "give way" sign (an upside down red triangle).

Here are all the signs that French drivers need to memorize:

They are classified into different categories: Interdictions, Obligations, Dangers, etc. Also, "pannonceaux" are the smaller signs attached to a sign which limit the obligation or interdiction to certain categories of drivers or certain times of the day, etc. For instance if you have a speed limit sign with a smaller sign underneath saying 3t, it means the speed limit applies only to trucks weighing at least 3 tons.

  2. they say "Au Revoir, you stupeeed Amereeecan peeg, pitooee to you"

  3. France has "STOP" signs because it's the EU standard. Quebec has "ARRET" signs. I have seen bilingual stop/arret signs in some parts of New Brunswick, then an Acadian area will have arret signs but an Anglo area will have stop signs?! It's kind of laughable.

  4. The stop signs in France are just like the ones in the US.  Bilingual signs (Stop/Arret) are seen in Quebec, Canada.  French ppl understand the word "stop" and I have even heard French construction workers yell "stop" on the job.

  5. Arret (with a ^ over the e)
