What do surfers surf in?

the net in some boardshorts are for when u go freeballing nothing under the boardshots thats what i reckon it probly is what there for cause thats what i use them for its pretty comfy :D

it depends were you are going to surf you may want to find out what the water temp is before you go you may need a wetsuit...if the water is warm your shorts will work OK with or without the netting

Just depends on where you go.... I usually just wear a wetsuit and if I'm at a beach where the water's warm enough, I just switch to boardshorts... It happened when I went to Oregon... The water was supposed to be freezing, but It turned out to be like 60 degrees... And unless you wanna get laughed at, I would cut out the net...

No they are made to be quick dry so you wear them as is. if you wear undeware undertneith then they will not dry as quickly  i wear them commando  cold water is wetsuit wear

Surfers surf in board shorts. The board shorts I've seen don't have nets in them. Here in Hawaii, there are some surf breaks that break over sand bars. If you have underwear (even those net things)  and sand gets in your shorts while you are surfing, you will have a very painful rash on areas that you don't want rash (use your imagination). Free ballin' (surf shorts with no underwear) works the best cause it's easier to change out of them in the parking lot. Your shorts also dry faster if you don't change as soon as you get out of the water.

A shark net in your boardshorts...LOL. That's probably the one of the funnier things I've heard all day. She's right that some surf spots have shark nets laid out around the higher risk beaches but those are typically in Australia and other highly populated tropical regions.

Depending on where and when you surf, your gear will vary. I wear boardshorts and rash guard in the summer here in Southern California, but I will step it up to a jacket (wetsuit top that zips up) and boardshorts as Fall rolls around and also as Spring approaches.

After that I wear my fullsuit during the Winter when the water dips to the 50 degree range. But I still see dudes out there padding out with trunks all year. Those guys are beasts though and they are in the super minority.

As for wetsuits in So Cal you rarely need anything thicker than a 3:4 and some booties, but some of my friends will rock a thicker 4:3 which is usually warmer. You can also wear a Spring suit (short sleeves and short legs on a wetsuit) but I've always thought those things looked pretty kook-ish so I've avoided them at all costs.

Boardshorts may or may not have netting in them depending on the manufacturer, but most of the boardshorts I have are freeballin. Just straight up boardshorts that help keep my thighs from getting waxburn.

Thats actually a shark net, so when your surfing, your safe from any shark attack to your family jewels. lol

Most surfers, unless in southern Cal or some tropical island somewhere all where either a 4/5 or a 3/4 wet suits as the water is to cold for any lenght of time for surfing. Those numbers refer to thickness of wet suit as the colder the water, the thicker it needs to be for say like Santa Cruz where water is 54 degrees right now. <Brrrrr>

Boardshorts in Santa Cruz will not get you in the water this time of year and possibly for 15 minutes until you turn completly blue in 30 minutes from the cold water. lol

I guess you could where Boardshorts at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk to check out all the chicks, but not a surfing item per-say unless in Hawaii during summer.

I live in Santa Cruz and most surfers wear 4/5 wet suits, gloves and booties at all the prime surfing locations such as Steaner Lane or Mavericks.
