Question:

What do teachers think of the shy students?

I'm starting high school next year, and I am very shy. I'm usually silent, and warming-up to people (including teachers) takes a long time, sometimes months or a year or two. What do teachers think of someone like me? Will they try to give me one-on-one attention (I'd like that, because it makes me feel like they care, but no teacher so far has tried it)?

  1. I loved mine.  Many were too shy to say much in class, especially since they were intimidated by the louder kids, but they would often write notes or draw pictures for me on their homework papers or tests and I'd write back or draw them a picture before handing the paper back.  We communicated a lot that way; I knew how they felt about things and they knew I was very aware of them.   Shy kids are my favorites!

  2. Usually, we don't think that much about them - we are busy trying to handle the troublemakers.

However, if you try to talk to most teachers when they aren't busy, they are very happy to talk to a student one-on-one. If you have questions about what you are learning, just ask before or after class whether they could help you with it sometime. I'd be willing to stay after school to help a student who asked, and most other teachers would be too.

Just like it's hard for you to talk to people, it can be hard for teachers to talk to students if they don't let us know anything about them or that they need help. Most teachers will try to talk to you about your interests, but they need to know what they are first. If your teacher asks you to fill out a "getting to know you" question sheet at the beginning of class, add lots of details so he/she can figure out what you care about. If your teachers ask you questions, try to give more than a very short answer so we have something to respond to. Sometimes we think that students don't want to talk to us when it might really just be shyness.

    Hope some of that helps.

  3. I don't think anything of them. My grading is based on what they do on tests. So, as long as they do their work and pass the tests, I don't really care if they're shy.

  4. I was kind of shy in high school. My teachers knew and helped me whenever I asked questions (usually after class b/c I was shy).

  5. they ignore them

  6. As a teacher, I allow my students to get to know the class as well as me and try to make the classroom inviting and comfortable for all the students.  As for teachers thinking certain things about the shy students, they really shouldn't do that.  We know all of you have your own ways of going about things.  I usually try to get them to come out of their shell a bit, but don't keep prodding as to make it uncomfortable.  I agree with the others that talking with the teacher during down time in class, or after/before class may be your best bet in beginning to get comfortable.  Even expressing the fact that you are shy to the teacher, (yea, I know that's probably scary), would be a step in the right direction.  High School is the time in your life that you should try a few new things and maybe coming out of your shell a little bit is the thing to try first.  Good luck.

I wish good teachers on you, especially since none of them have tried to give you one-on-one attention before!!
