So the school I go to is a AAAA (4-A) school. And the school my friend goes to is an AA (2-A) school.

I know the more A's, the better, but overall, what do the A's mean?

Sports? Academics?

  1. That usually refers to the size of a school, or at least it did in my day.

It had to do with matching up teams for sports. The smaller schools (A, AA) have a much smaller talent pool from which to draw than a AAA school. So they are more fairly matched against other schools of the same size.

  2. Doesn't it have to do with batteries

Like double a being the bigger kind?

  3. The A's have to do with the size of the school -- it has NOTHING to do with the quality of the school, and it only applies to sports.  From state to state, it varies, but basically, it was a system that was developed so that schools of the same size could play schools of similar size.  It was decided it was unfair to have a school with 2,000 kids in a high school play football with a school that might only have 400 kids in a high school.  A small school doesn't have the same depth of players to choose from, so it's more even if they play another smaller school, instead of a really big school that has five 300 lb. linemen!
