What do the Americans think of the English?

I mean in stereotypical terms. Every country has a view on others and being English myself I know how Americans are stereotyped (not in a negative light) in the British media- I just wanted to know how we are portrayed in the American media?

i.e. Snobbish, posh, etc. :)

Any answers appreciated.

  1. you are portrayed as our friends, like our cousins, with lots of culture, that you all love tea and sometimes a bit stuffy, that you have dry sense of humor, are very proper, and love to drink, my mom went to england and said everyone was so nice and friendly that she went back a second time and brought us back tea from england.

  2. stiff

  3. April: Amy Winehouse is a h**l of a lot more talented then most American musicians. Have you ever actually listened to her stuff?

  4. Stereotypes:

    -Cute accent

    -Loves tea

    -Stiff

    -Conservative

    -Snobbish

  5. Well, from the South, most English are well respected, but sometimes they are generalized as wimps.

I am particularly from a family of Brits, not far back in the line, and I don't see it that way. I think they are fascinating. They found my southern Texas slang fascinating as well, so it was all good.

English is like parents to the US so without some respect to them and their culture there would be no respect for ourselves.

  6. Beautiful accents and talented musicians (minus Amy Winehouse)

  7. Stereotypes? Well, not all stereotypes are true. Some of the stereotypes for British people are generally really bad teeth, uptight (don't know how to let loose and have fun), rude/s****., drink too much tea, and hate Americans but always listen to American music and watch American TV programs. These are stereotypes the American people in general hold of British people. Our media really doesn't say much about you all.

To be honest, I would rather have your stereotypes instead of the fat, lazy, stupid, loud and arrogant stereotypes Americans have.

Oh and I almost forgot; really s**y accents!!

Edit; no, I have not heard of the Northern English accent but I would love to hear it! I'm sure it would make me smile.

Edit # 2; thanks for the google vid, it was great!

  8. stiff upper lip is actually an American term

I believe most Americans would look up to a t**d if it spoke to them in an English accent

Americans think England is still as it was years ago in the time of Mary Poppins when you could walk in town centres at night without having your kicked in by drunks or a gang of bored chavs

  9. well, we arent igonorant like u British. in my community, we r free spirited and weren't that racist like the europenas. for example, the spainish basketball team releaased a photo of being racist to the Chinese. PLus u guys r very hippocritical. When u say we r dumb, i see rly stupid questions being posted on the UK yahoo answers. plus if we r lazy, then why r ppl from the Uk posting questions that can be answer with a google search. we arent that racist.

  10. your question is a bit generalized. surely different Americans have different opionions about English people. I don't like George Bush but he doesn't necessarily represent all Americans.

  11. Cool accent ....stiff upper lip.....a bit reserved....fish and chips...less than perfect teeth...royalty ....flushed cheeks and reddish hair parted on the side...comradeship in the pub

The person below me ( I love d) suffers from small p***s disorder. Please ignore, it is his way of coping.

  12. Old question done the rounds hundreds of times!!!!!!

  13. Intelligent, suave and good looking

  14. Good question

I was born in South Africa, and moved here when i was sixteen, not too long ago, and i had absolutely no idea how England was(due to poor european histroy being taught), but i definitely thought it would be all modern and such, since it was one of the top countries.

I was quite wiereded out by the top of the line modern variety of cars parked in midevil house driveways

the only stereotype I heard of was you drank alot of tea?

but i know alot of people in the uk think that the whole of south africa is made up of black people living in huts hunting buck and deer.

although it is as dangerous as people stereotype it as.

sorry my answer strayed from your question but whatever
