What do the Irish think of the English?

Question

I'm going on holiday to Ireland soon. Are English tourists generally tolerated there or are people likely to take exception to us.

I genuinely am curious so feel free to speak your mind - I won't be offended.

If you are unsure of a place don't go there, there is no great love for English people in Ireland

And to club or whatever that picture instead of a name is I think you should probably check over your history lessons as you clearly haven't a clue.

The Irish people do not differ from the rest of the British people, other than religion.  If not for religion, there would be no problems now. As it is, religion has created this divide between the Irish and the rest of the British Isles.  Who said the Irish were 'oppressed'? It was the Irish who started the wars, not the rest of Britain. Let us never forget this fact. It is their Catholicism that forced them to create problems for Britain. As such, they were forced under the British jackboot, where hopefully, they will remain.

The British did not exploit the Irish. Brits made them pay the tax for the Infrastucture, that's all. Irish illegal traders don't understand up till now, that Government Tax must be paid off.

Ahh no we'll welcome english people to our country just like any other tourists from anywhere else(well most of us anyway)In fairness though and i dont mean any offence to u i am directing this comment at your government England has never apologized for taking our land and farms,making us pay high taxes and rent,beating our men and raping our wives and letting their citizens live on large estates providing them with food while we irish starved during the Great Famine.Once again i must stress that is not your fault or any other english citizen but this bullying by England only stopped 80 years ago and i am angry that ur government has never apologized they just pretend the raping and killing,discrimination and starvation never happened.But i doubt your an MP so welcome to Ireland i hope you enjoy your stay!

English people make the greatest number of tourists in the Republic. You might occasionally come across someone who doesn't like you being there - and believe it or not, that's more likely to be one of the Irish Americans who's stuck in a time warp than a real Irish person.

Just remember to let history be history, and be friendly, and you'll be fine.

The Irish are extraordinarily hospitable to the English.  Believe me, I've been there.  But although I have an English accent I am Welsh.  When they hear that they apologise profusely for having thought I'm English - as if it were an insult.  They speak and act as they find.  I'm sure you will have no problems.  But if you have any non-English roots then use those.

Dont worry- you will be fine. Really the Irish 'hated' the english because of the troubles, but its not true now. Really a tourist is a tourist. You would be treated just the same as everyone else. Dont mention the troubles just to be safe. Sure you would be fine! If your a terrible person, of course, people wouldnt like you, but I'm sure your lovely!:) Enjoy your trip! *note there might be a couple of pr*cks but dont mind them, they're only a minority of the population, and they're probably drunk!

It doesn't matter anymore were your from.  If someone were to judge you it would be on personality not on Nationality!  You'll have a great time, no worrys.  It's 2008 now!!  We have people from all over the world living in Ireland now.  Hope you have a great holiday! :-)

There are loads and loads of English here, what I mean is, being English, you will not stand out and be noticed.

ex Brit living here for over three years and would not go back, love it, have a great holiday.

Don't listen to the people who have said the Irish do not like the English, it is just not true, they are more concerned these days over the east europeans.

They might be hospitable to the individual, based on that person's characteristics and attitude, but some of the older Irish seem to view the English as the race which invaded and colonised their country and aren't in that much of a hurry to give the remaining bit back. And who can blame them?

Tourism is an important part of the income of many communities, so it's best not to discourage them. And, same as anywhere, don't discuss religion or politics if you can avoid it.

ps  Best to avoid wine as well unless you have a thick wallet.

I'm Irish.The traditional Irish don't like the English.They've been taught to hate them when they were growing up because of what they did to us in the past.Naturally, when they're talking to an English person its different.They can get along with them just fine when they're on their own but the Irish do collectively hate the English.

We Irish love the English.  'Tolerated' means something you have to put up with. That's not the way it is.

Thousands of Irish people live in the UK, work there, and enjoy the freedom that come from living there.

I think you shouldn't mention 'The Troubles'

Any tourists are tolerated! hah, In mainland europe i see people who are a bit more negative towards english people but not in Ireland. I always get called English when on holiday, even though I'm irish!

You should be generally accepted well, but you must be wary of mentioning the IRA, or the Irish Troubles, or the colonization of Ireland over the last 800 years. You never know who may be offended.

you will find irish people easy going and friendly, get into conversation and you will find time will fly, dont be afraid to voice an opinion they apprecciate differing opinions, have a great time, you will want to return

I'm English. I've been to Ireland many times,  I always had a wonderful welcome .I have been all over the country and everywhere I went I found the people to be very friendly.  I've many friends there now .  Go and enjoy, x

We tolerate nobody and accept everyone, conduct yourself with the same respect for yourself and others as you would back home and you'll find we'll go the extra step to make you welcome.  If your lost and ask for directions regardless of your nationality you'd be pushed to find a Irish person being ignorant to you.
