When travelling with Virgin Trains you often hear different toned alarm noises whether you are in the quiet carriage or not. What do these mean?

  1. The three-tone beeps are crew call tones. This is normally the Train Manager calling the shop to ask for a cup of coffee.

Its also a way that crew can get the attention of other crew without having to make an annoucement over the pa (public annoyance) system .

Midland Mainline (now called East Midlands Trains) also has the 3 tone beeps on their trains.

  2. it goes off when a virgin gets on    however that isnt too often on the london - glasgow route

  3. Similar to a plane where crew at one end call crew at the other end.

  4. I know the ones you mean, very annoying. It's on the pendulino trains, it indicates when the "lean" of the train is activated...

Below a certain speed it isn't used, so you have a flat floor, above a certain speed the train leans like a motorcycle into a curve... the alarm is for the transition.

  5. tHE ONES WHEN U R TRAVELLING ARE DIFFERENT CREW CALLS AND THERE IS ONE FOR THE DOORS OPENING AND CLOSING!! HOPE THIS HELPS x

  6. it is when the doors are opening and closing

  7. The three-tone beeps? They're crew call tones. For example, if the buffet car steward(ess) needs the conductor who is collecting tickets, she can press a button and the conductor will get to the nearest phone, without blasting out some incomprehensible message on the PA system.

There are several tones, but beyond the one above, I don't know what the others mean.

  8. I've never heard them, sorry.
