It has bugged me for ages, my boyfriend thinks ventilation but I'm not so sure.

    Tell him you have it on good authority that it's a device to make sure vans and high-sided vehicles don't blow over in high winds, and that it works by equalising air pressure.

  14. 'fraid i have to agree with quite a few previous answers. They are indeed for ventilation, and yes you should trust men about mechanical things, just like men should trust women about dress sense. I think its a genetic thing!
