  1. It originated with the political cartoonist Thomas Nast, who drew cartoons during the 1870s for "Harper's Weekly". He's also considered the father of American political cartooning.


  2. Democrats have donkeys, or mules, or a word yahoo censors won't allow; Republicans have an elephant.

  3. Symbolism.

    Because one of those animals is highly intelligent with a long memory and the other one is a jackass. LOL

    I've always wondered about that too.
