  3. They are sort Generic abbreviations which identifies the type and model of the locomotive. For e-g : WDM-2 alligns to Wide guage, Diesel, Mixed traffic locomotive. The Diesel locomotive is meant to be used for hauling Passenger and Frieght trains in Broad Guage. 2 stands for variant.  Likewise, you can also see WAM - Wide guage, Electric locomotive used for Mixed traffic. If the Broad guage electric locomotive is meant to haul passenger traffic, then it is represented as WAP.  For meter guage Diesel locomotive used for mixed traffic it is YDM where Y stands for Meter guage.  This conventions are followed by Indian Railways for all its locomotives.
