  1. There are many kinds of hawks, and their diet can vary depending on what kind it is.

    Red-tailed Hawk

    Family: Accipitridae

    Genus: Buteo

    Species: B. jamaicensis

    Diet

The Red-tailed Hawk is carnivorous, and an opportunistic feeder. Its diet is mainly small mammals, but it also includes birds and reptiles. Prey varies with regional and seasonal availability, but usually centers on small rodents. Additional prey include rabbits, snakes, waterfowl, bats, shrews, crustaceans, insects, rodents, and fish.

The Red-tailed Hawk hunts primarily from an elevated perch site, swooping down from a perch to seize prey, catching birds while flying, or pursuing prey on the ground from a low flight.

Prey range in size from beetles to White-tailed Jackrabbits, which are double the weight of most Red-tails. In captivity in winter, an average Red-tail will eat about 135 g (4-5 oz) daily. The Great Horned Owl occupies a similar ecological niche nocturnally, taking similar prey. Competition may occur between the Red-tailed Hawk and the Great Horned Owl during twilight.

    Accipitridae

    Diet and feeding

Accipitrids are predominately predators and most species actively hunt for their prey. A few species may opportunistically feed on fruit and in one species, the Palm-nut Vulture, it forms the major part of the diet. However other animals form the bulk of the diet of most species. Insects are taken exclusively by around 12 species, in great numbers by 44 additional species, and opportunistically by many others. The Snail Kite and Hook-billed Kites are specialists in consuming snails. Bazas and forest hawks in the genus Accipiter may take reptiles from trees whilst other species hunt them on the ground. Snakes in particular are targeted by the snake-eagles (Circaetus) and serpent-eagles (Spilornis and Dryotriorchis).

  2. Hawks are Birds Of Prey, and all of them eat other animals.

Birds Of Prey include Hawks, Falcons, Eagles, Owls, Vultures, and Condors.

Different species of Hawks eat different animals.  Sparrow Hawks (or Kestrils) eats insects, small rodents, and lizards.  Coopers Hawks feed on other birds.  Red-Tailed Hawks feed on rodents like squirrels, and rabbits, and snakes.  Ospreys feed exclusively on fish.  Etc, etc.

Falcons usually feed on other birds.  The Perigrin Falcon is the fastest animal in the world.  It can dive at 250 MPH.

Birds Of Prey are rarely, if ever, fed upon by other Birds Of Prey.

Eagles are the same way, and many are specialized in the prey they eat.  Harpy Eagles eat monkeys.  The Bald Eagle feeds mainly on fish.  The Golden Eagle feeds on any mammal it can kill.

Owls usually feed on small rodents that frequent the night.

Vultures and Condors feed on carrion (dead animals).

Birds Of Prey have the best eyesight in the animal kingdom. A hawk can spot a "mouse" from 2,000 feet in the air.

  3. Birds and mammals

  4. Anything that crawls or swims.  They don't eat owls because owls are nocturnal and hawks are not.

    Roadkill counts as crawling, too.

  6. hawks eat chickens

  7. Depends on the hawk species and where the hawk lives.  Generally rodents (mice and voles) or other small mammals, some birds, some fish, reptiles.  Dead stuff and road kill (carrion) sometimes.  Meats.  Not nuts and berries.
