What do the letters CR on a medication box mean?

I know it means controlled-release but I have no idea what that is.

  1. i'm pretty sure it's continuous release and it means that instead of sending all of the med all at once into your system, it slowly sends small amounts out over a longer period of time, but i've got no idea how it works. . . .


  2. It means it doesn't hit you all at once. The pill or whatever "breaks" down over time. Kind of like it "works" throughout the day.

  3. it means the medication doesn't go into your system in one shot.  usually the tablet is designed to dissolve very slowly so that you get a consistent level over a period of time.
