  1. the numbers stand for how much weight they can hold and the letter is the speed rating.

  2. How much weight you can haul with out blowing the sidewall out of the tires.

  3. The load index refers to the load-carrying capacity of a tire, or how much weight a tire can support.

    For example, if a tire has a load index of 89, it can support 1,279 pounds (from below chart) at maximum air pressure.

    Multiply that by four (4 x 1,279 = 5,116 pounds) to get your maximum load-carrying capacity.

    A = 2 Ply Rating

    B = 4 Ply Rating = 35 psi max. load inflation

    C = 6 Ply Rating = 50 psi max. load inflation

    D = 8 Ply Rating = 65 psi max. load inflation

    E = 10 Ply Rating = 80 psi max. load inflation

    F = 12 Ply Rating = 95 psi max. load inflation

    G = 14 Ply Rating

    H = 16 Ply Rating

    J = 18 Ply Rating

    L = 20 Ply Rating

    M = 22 Ply Rating

    N = 24 Ply Rating

    XL= Extra Load

    REIN= Reinforced

    It is not recommended to install tires with a lower load carrying capacity than what came on your car from the factory.

  4. Load Index

    P195/60R15 87S - The load index (87) is the tire size's assigned numerical value used to compare relative load carrying capabilities. In the case of our example the 87 identifies the tires ability to carry approximately 1,201 pounds.

    The higher the tire's load index number, the greater its load carrying capacity.

    89 = 1,279 pounds

    88 = 1,235 pounds

    87 = 1,201 pounds

    86 = 1,168 pounds

    85 = 1,135 pounds

    A tire with a higher load index than that of the Original Equipment tire indicates an increase in load capacity. A tire with a load index equal to that of the Original Equipment tire indicates an equivalent load capacity. A tire with a lower load index than the Original Equipment tire indicates the tire does not equal the load capacity of the original.

    Typically, the load indexes of the tires used on passenger cars and light trucks range from 70 to 110.

  5. how much weight you can put on those tires without having a blow-out.
