  1. Normally, it would mean:

    1 number: Most likely there for identification purposes. So if using the same ball as someone else you just use different numbers.

    2 numbers: Indicate the ball's compression rating. Lower numbers around 70 or so are for juniors or ladies. Higher numbers around the 100 mark are for men.

    3 numbers: Indicate the number of dimples on the ball, if the number is around 300 or above.


  2. When you buy a dozen golf balls by the box, there are 4 packages of 3 balls called "sleeves".  Each sleeve in the box is  individually numbered 1 through 4.  They also help in identifying your ball .

  3. The number on golf balls is designed simply to distinguish your ball from the other players. If there were no numbers on the balls and you were playing with someone thats using the same kind of ball there would be no way to tell who's is who's unless you use a marker to mark on the ball.

  4. it's just so you can tell a difference between your balls and your friend's balls =)
