Under the Three Lion's badge all the players have a number, normally in the 600s. What is this?

  1. All England players display an individual number on their shirts immediately beneath the England crest. This number represents the sequential rank in which they represented the country in each of the formats of Test, One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 cricket. The number features particularly on their outerwear (shirt, jersey/fleece or training top) and also their headgear (cap, baseball cap or sunhat). It is also used effectively to 'name' their personal kit.

The system is used by most cricketing countries including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Australia and the West Indies. It is reported that, for England, the numbering system and allocations were first researched by England scorer and statistician, Malcolm Ashton.
