  1. Ramen and rice.  Daily.  Small portions.

  2. Lots of fish, as it's a seaside town.  Veggies are abundant in the Japanese diet, as are rice and noodles.

  3. The famous foods in Kagoshima are black pig (a.k.a. pork that comes from the special black pigs that live in Kagoshima); satsuma age, which is a (often sweet) fried fish cake; satsuma emo - sweet potato - which is made into anything from sweet glutinous rice (mochi) desserts to pancakes to just plain and grilled, usually eaten in the winter time.

The famous alcohol is shochu, which is similar to sake but it is made from sweet potatoes.

Apart from those "famous" dishes, I think people in Kagoshima generally eat a typical Japanese diet - miso soup and rice (sometimes with fish) for breakfast, bento boxes with rice balls, weiners, tamago yaki (fried egg) for lunch, and meat and vegetable dishes with rice for dinner.  Black pig ramen is very popular, and, of course, can't forget the natto - Japanese fermented beans that smell like feet but actually taste really good (IMO).

One of my favorite winter meals in Kagoshima is yuu dofu - tofu hot pot.  It's made of a simple broth, and in it is lots of tofu, mushrooms, quail eggs, and just about anything else you want.  Eaten with a light ponsu sauce - it's so good.

  4. Lots of rice, and fish ! the Jananese also eat a lot of pork,  beef ,  veggies, and noodles !
