such as 2nd degree assault, 1st degree murder, 3rd degree sexual assault, and so on

  1. The severity of the crime. First degree is the worst.

    Using homicide as an example, First degree would be intentionally planning the murder. Second degree would be intentional, but without prior planning. Third degree would be causing death by negligence or recklessness.
