What do the signs "Wait Until Green" mean? No turn on red?

Before you say, "Duh," think about it.

I lived on the east coast bacl when they changed the laws and all the 'No Turn on Red' signs popped up everywhere on our tiny roads. Then I moved to CA for a few years.

When I moved back east again, there were suddenly all these "Wait Until Green" signs everywhere.

Are they perhaps a more polite way of saying "No Turn on Red on difficult corners? After all, 'waiting until green' is the law in normal situations so why be redundant?

So what are the signs, "Wait until green" there for?

  1. Some drivers think the light will turn GREEN as soon as the other side turns red.  Some street (for whatever the reason) have delayed green.

So they tell you to WAIT FOR THE GREEN.

    Simple.

    Good Luck.

P.S.  I live and drive in NYC.

  2. It may just be a reminder to all drivers, you know a safety issue.........

  3. I live in CA and I've never heard of that.  California is supposed to follow the Federal standards for signage.  "No turn on red" is correct for that.  Maybe a city or county road commission decided to get clever.  There's one that has "Speed limit 24" signs on a road.  (what!?)

  4. Maybe just in case someone doesn't understand the "No turn on red" signs. It can't hurt to be redundant when you're dealing with life and death. Think about it.

  5. these are Ameicans, you have to spoon feed it to most...

  6. Just to remind you not to turn on the red, wait until it turns green.

  7. I think they have this for dangerous intersections.
